| Starting Date: May 10, 1999 Who:
Pete Palmer |
 |
Short Bio: Pete is a 46 year old ultrarunner from
Connecticut. He has two children, Daniel and Lesley. Running career started
13 years ago. Pete's first ultra was the MMTR in 1993. Interestingly, Pete is also an avid
golfer. In 1998 he shot a 108 in 52 minutes.
Starting date for the record attempt is May 10th at 3:00 PM. The
plan is to average 14 hours per day at 3 miles per hour. If this pace is maintained the
time will be 51 days and 12 hours.
Ed Kostak from New Hartford, CT and Vic LaPort from Clarksburg, MA
will be crewing for the first two weeks. Following that, Bruce Heim from Bristol, CT will
take over until David Blair (Lone Wolf) arrives around May 25th.
Most nights will be spent on the trail with an occasional hotel stay
thrown in. Most of the trail will be covered solo.
1st Report - May 15, 1999
We received an e-mail that gives some basic information
about how Pete is doing. We are trying to get more specific info. One of the problems we
will encounter in reporting where he is in relation to David's record will be his 3:00 PM
start time.
Included below is the e-mail we recieved. Pete is
"Cujo" This translates to him being a little bit ahead of David's record. (The
best we can determine from the info given)

On Saturday May 29th, David drove out to see Pete. Pete
had stayed at Hog Camp Gap. (Right off the Masochist course to the left before entering
the loop for those who have run the MMTR) David was able to get a few pictures and walk
with Pete for a few miles. The report straight from David is Pete is doing very well. He
is following his plan (3 miles per hour for approximately 14 hours per day) very closely.
Occasionally he will get a few more miles or a few less depending on the road crossings.
Pete said his feet are a little sore but no blisters. He has had very good weather without
the high heat and humidity normally associated with this time of the year. Today (May
31st) it is supposed to be in the high 80's in Lynchburg with the same weather continuing
for most of the week.
Here are the stats for the last couple of days:
