Unfortunately the constant hazardous trail conditions along with the 
     weather and a knee injury has prevented Hartwell from continuing his 
     goal to break the Long Trail record in under 5 days.  He had to stop 
     his quest yesterday afternoon a little beyond Mad Tom Notch completing 
     25 miles, most of it with a twisted knee injury suffered that morning 
     when trying to climb a washed out part of the trail.
     
     Said Hartwell, "Everything was so slippery, wet and muddy, it was 
     impossible to develop a decent stride and keep up the pace.  I 
     physically couldn't go any further."
     
     His total accomplishment ended with completing 63 miles in 16 total 
     walking/running hours against all the odds.  Hartwell is considering 
     the setback as a postponement and plans to try again when conditions 
     are more favorable.
