Gary asked me why I was running the Long Trail and my first response is the old tried and true response of "because it's there". Other reasons are because Dr. Horton made me (not really) but I guess the big reason is because I couldn't do the AT. Mike Morton and I were originally planning to attempt to break the AT record this summer, but due to injuries on both our parts it never materialized. I was forced to sit and watch the updates of Andrew and Sam as they tried to break the record. After they were doing so well for so long I decided that they were both going to break the record, and I realized I was annoyed. I really like Dr. Horton and I didn't want anyone to break the record unless it was Mike or I (nothing at all against Andrew or Sam). As I was reading the info about Sam I read that he had the Long Trail Record of 6 days and 6 hours. I had never heard of this trail before that. Then I read about another person who tried to break the Long Trail Record and I thought that a record of 6 days would be a lot easier to attempt than a record of 52 days. My wife thought it would be a good idea so the thought was somewhat in my mind when on July 20 I was running with David Horton and I JOKINGLY asked if he wanted to go to Vermont next week while I run the Long Trail and he answered seriously with yes. So, I had to begin planning and I will begin on Thursday morning. I think my wife wants me to do this so I will hate it, and will decide to never do the AT. I guess I will see if this is "fun" or is a miserable way to spend a few days. I love trails and it will be all new trails. My plan is the following: (first let me say that I did back to back 50-K's one week-end and that is the extent of my multi-days, so this is a tentative plan: God willing I will be successful) Thursday - 62.7 miles Friday - 58.4 miles Saturday - 58.4 miles Sunday - 54.7 miles Monday - 36.9 miles I have never seen this trail or the terrain so ................ Thanks before I start to David Horton and Kennan Campbell(my father) who are giving up a week to drive around Vermont making sure I am living.
