Ask any ultrarunner this question - What is the best new ultarunning book out today? Certainly the answer would be "Running Through the Wall." "Bob Holtel captures the essence of all essential ingredients that combine to produce an envied athletic endurance achievement. For anyone who has rested on their own laurels of completing a marathon or two, only they can truly appreciate Bob's accomplishment - Running four consecutive marathons every week, 12 weeks straight for three consecutive summers, on uneven rocky trails and at altitude!!! The solitude of it all, the courage to run with pain and complete the task at hand, the enjoyment of simple pleasures of mountain running - these are all brought home in vivid detail through this account. As an athlete I am honored to have shared the adventure. This book has produced a new hero who has proved again that with vision, preparation, planning and courage you can accomplish your dreams."  Review provided by Michael Franz and posted on
I have recommended this book to at least 15 people who have expressed an interest in starting to run or just to learn more about running. I don't know of any other book that covers so clearly and to the point what most runners need and want to know. Everything from starting to run all the way through the marathon. I can't tell you how many times I return to Jeff's book to refresh or re-learn the material. The book is written for any level of runner...there is something for each person. I am always amazed at how I can go back to this book and uncover one more idea/tactic for running that produces a tangible difference. I love the sport of running. Jeff's book, although published some time ago, continues to be the sole source for myself and for those that I come in contact with when the subject is running. As a corporate trainer, I know the importance of having a solid source for workshops I facilitate...get the book and I think you will also understand why I feel so strongly about the power of its content! -- Reviewed by and posted on
This is the definitive book on ultrarunning. If you do a search for the all time best books on the Ultramarathon this book will undoubtedly be included. Long since out of print there are some still available through used book sellers at

The law of supply and demand has influenced the price of this book. I guess that tells you something about the book itself.

This book was written in the late 70's and is the first true "running book." Covers all aspects of training and racing. Very affordable as an out of print used book.
Fascinating book! This is a fictional book that uses the real life "Trans America Footrace" of 1928 and 1929 as its inspiration.
